Chocolate Girl Vanessa and her Mamma Wonka Aida make, package, and ship everything by hand in their little kitchen in New York City with so much Love!
Vanessa started Gnosis in 2008 and her mom joined her in 2017, but before any chocolate was made, their home was filled with aromas of love-filled food, as Aida is from Italy, where one shows love by nourishing through food.
With respect for the origins of cacao, the well-being of society and Earth’s natural majesty, we celebrate health, exquisite flavor, and integrity!
We begin with ethically sourced RAW Cacao from Belize, Ecuador, Peru, Grenada, & Madagascar - and add low-glycemic sweeteners, nutrient-dense superfoods & medicinal herbs sourced fastidiously from the Amazon to the Himalayas.

The founder of Gnosis is Vanessa Barg (aka Chocolate Girl), a Board Certified Holistic Health counselor, who began making chocolate in 2006 as a gift for her clients. She personally visits our sources and works with them directly to verify quality, working conditions, & support the growth of organic farming. Gnosis' products are the wings upon which Vanessa’s mission of nutritional integrity, sustainable business, and societal transformation fly.
We maintain environmental and societal consciousness with each step by working directly with our producers, giving back to our community, and using PCW recycled, biodegradable packaging printed with veggie inks.
This employee-owned company has been guided purely by passion since 2007. We grow via word of mouth by earning our customers’ ambassadorship with the quality of our creations. We choose to invest in sustainable packaging - PCW recycled, vegetable ink printed, glass vs. plastic jars, and biodegradable or home compostable bags. We ship world-wide, year-long without styrofoam, and we reuse packing & shipping materials.
Vanessa personally visits supply chains to ensure our standards of sustainability and Raw Integrity are upheld. With this level of transparency, Gnosis can confidently conduct business that honors the culture and tradition of those who tend crops we are so grateful to obtain for our alchemical blends of cacao and other sacred botanicals.
Domestically, our “corporate” presence serves the community as a platform for consumer education, empowerment, and engagement. Promoting our family of like-minded companies, sponsoring inspirational events, and hosting health seminars and chocolate parties is not just tremendous fun… Transparency in company communications and sincere community collaboration are the very keys to our 13 years!
Inspiration
Vanessa’s clients never “forgot” to take their supplements again!
In 2007 - when raw food and green juice were fringe - a wellness coach with training in preventative medicine, and passion for culinary exploration discovered the secret to getting her clients to remember their supplements every day.
Vanessa was introduced to raw cacao beans by David Wolfe in 2006. She began experimenting at home - blending these magical beans with agave nectar - and soon discovered that by balancing the flavor profile of cacao with fruits & nuts, she could add a significant quantity of herbs! It became clear - chocolate is the ultimate delivery system for Ayurvedic, Chinese, and South American herbs.
And so a new category of chocolate was born - Functional Chocolate! With no startup captital or partners, no sales team or financial consultant - Vanessa’s bars were the first raw - the first low-glycemic - and the first superfood-infused chocolate bars to hit Whole Foods Market.
Vanessa’s life is dedicated to maintaining integrity in every facet of her company as it grows - pushing the boundaries of what an unfunded company can accomplish in one of the most competitive categories in the food industry. With a vision of dipping the world in functional chocolate, we are honored to collaborate with revolutionary entrepreneurs, high integrity companies, and the mainstream media to ignite a preventative healthcare system without sacrifice, side effects, or stents.
